2025 New Zealand Indians Hockey Championship

Hosted by Waikato Indian Sports Club

After a two-year hiatus, Christchurch successfully assembled a team to compete in the Hockey Championship held in Hamilton.

Team Roster:Cam Hayde, Shakeel Morar, Hamish Ravji, Neel Govind, Rihan Lallu, Arshpreet Kandola, Will Hayde, Hamesh Govind, Arshaan Askari, Vivek Lallu, Raj Ravji, Sanjay Kanji (C), Jayant Kanji, Akshay Patel, Kaveshan Karunakaram (G)

Coach:Sunjay Ganda

Management:Dharmesh Budhia and Yateen Lallu

Arshpreet Kandola joined the team as a draft player from Auckland, while Cam Hayde, Sanjay Kanji, and Jayant Kanji were PCP players.

The rest of the squad proudly represented Christchurch residents. With just one training session—attended by only eight players back in mid-April—the team flew into Auckland on Friday night and made the drive to Hamilton.

Off the field, the team attended the official social hosted by the Waikato Indian Sports Club at the Indian Association Hall. It was a fantastic evening—well organised and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Christchurch finished 7th out of 8 teams in the A section—a result that did not reflect the true performance or potential of the team. Their thrilling shootout win against Wellington A in the opening match, despite virtually no preparation, made people sit up and take notice. Drawn into the "pool of death," Christchurch showed resilience and skill throughout. If not for a heartbreaking last-minute loss to Auckland, the tournament might have unfolded very differently.

Team MVP went to goalkeeper Kaveshan Karunakaram for his outstanding efforts between the posts, although surprisingly, he was not named in the tournament team.

Vivek LalluandArshpreet Kandolawere deservedly recognised with selection to the tournament team.

I was incredibly proud of our team; they formed strong bonds over the weekend and are eager to represent CISC again in 2026. Arshpreet Kandola was a fantastic discovery. The mix of experience and youth was a real strength, acting as our secret weapon in challenging moments where more youth-dominated teams may have struggled.
